A Guide To: Eczema in Children
Few things are harder for a parent to witness than a child who can't stop scratching. The interrupted sleep, the raw and inflamed skin, the helplessness of trying cream after cream without finding anything that truly helps. If you're in this season with your child, I want to start by acknowledging how genuinely exhausting it is — for them, and for you.
Eczema is one of the conditions I see most often in children at Botanica Grove. And while it's incredibly common, "common" doesn't mean it's simply something to manage indefinitely. In my experience, eczema in children is rarely just a skin issue — it's almost always an invitation to look a little deeper.
The skin as a messenger
In naturopathic thinking, the skin is considered a reflection of what's happening internally. When the body is struggling — with inflammation, with an overburdened immune system, with gut imbalance, or with an exposure it's finding difficult to process — the skin is often one of the first places that struggle becomes visible.
This is why topical treatments, while sometimes helpful for short-term relief, rarely resolve eczema on their own. If the underlying drivers aren't addressed, the skin continues to respond — because the message it's carrying hasn't yet been heard.
Common root causes worth exploring
Every child is different, and an individual assessment is always essential. But some of the factors I commonly explore when working with children with eczema include:
Gut health and microbiome imbalance — there is a well-established connection between gut health and skin health, often referred to as the gut-skin axis. Disruptions to the gut microbiome, particularly in early childhood, can significantly influence immune function and inflammation.
Food sensitivities — dairy, gluten, eggs, and certain additives are among the most common dietary triggers, though sensitivities are highly individual and benefit from careful, personalised investigation.
Immune dysregulation — eczema is an immune-mediated condition, and supporting immune balance is often a central part of naturopathic care.
Environmental triggers — dust mites, pet dander, mould, and certain household products can all contribute to flares and are worth reviewing as part of a whole-picture approach.
Nutritional deficiencies — certain nutrients, including zinc, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids, play an important role in skin barrier function and immune regulation.
What a Naturopathic approach looks like
Working with a children's naturopath for eczema means taking the time to understand your child's full health picture — not just the skin itself, but their gut health, their immune history, their diet, their environment, and their family history. From there, we build a gentle, age-appropriate plan that works toward the root cause rather than simply soothing the surface.
This might include dietary adjustments, gut-healing support, herbal or nutritional medicines suited to your child's age, and practical recommendations for your home environment. Where appropriate, functional testing can help us identify specific triggers or deficiencies that may be contributing.
Care that comes to you
I know that managing a child with eczema is tiring enough without adding complicated logistics to the mix. As a children's naturopath telehealth practitioner, I offer all consultations online — which means you can access thorough, personalised naturopathic support from home, without disrupting your child's routine or your own.
A note on hope
Eczema can feel relentless. But in my experience, when we take the time to genuinely understand what's driving it, meaningful and lasting improvement is very much possible. Many of the children I work with — and their relieved, grateful parents — are proof of that.
